We are a volunteer organization staffed by highly skilled artistic directors, board members and volunteers. Capitol Ballet Center, the school connected to the company, trains ages 4 to adult and inspires intermediate and advanced level dancers to join the company and perform, thereby preparing them for professional careers in ballet. Dancers in the company range in age from age 11 to adult.
We work to instill an appreciation of dance and the arts throughout the Greater Sacramento Region. We strive to perpetually empower and motivate dancers through the discipline and study of dance, while enriching the experience of the audiences who attend our performances. Each year we serve over 3,000 individuals through performances and outreach.
Capitol Ballet Company presents the full length ballet of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker every December to an audience of youth, families, adults and seniors in venues throughout the Sacramento region. Each spring we present various classical ballets and contemporary premieres in addition to dances from the younger ballet students. In addition to Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, our expanding repertoire includes Swan Lake, Giselle, Paquita, La Bayadere, Le Corsaire Pas de Trois, Don Quixote, Les Sylphides, Sylvia, A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, Coppelia and Markitenka. Our premieres include Grofe Variations, Dvorak Serenade, Sweet Debussy, Spanish Rhapsody, and Pastorale for Guitar and Ascension. New additions include Les Patineurs, Shostakovich, and Sweet and Low. We provide outreach with free tickets, presentations and discounted performances to under-served or confined individuals who might not otherwise see a live ballet performance. We serve over 3,000 individuals most years.
Many of our former company dancers are accepted into professional ballet companies such as the Texas Ballet Theater, Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet Met, San Diego Ballet and Smuin Ballet.
Audience numbers and ticket revenues have remained stable over the years in spite of the great recession’s continued effect on disposable income.
We provide free or discounted tickets to increase participation of under-served individuals in our program. We work with organizations that serve individuals confined by chronic conditions, disabilities, age or income.
Audience members consistently rate us with high marks on quality of performances, both from the general public and seasoned patrons who understand the art form. We offer excellent value ticket prices, which allow a wide audience access to the arts.
